Fraser Hie hoping to shrug off bad luck in Sydney

Fraser Hie must have encountered many black cats and walked under plenty of ladders to have the bad luck he endured at Winton, but the Victorian hopes there will be no more for the rest of the season.

Entering the opening round of the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades Series as a top contender, a fuel pump problem hampered his run during two of the four races held at the inaugural event after qualifying sixth on both days.

A tangle in the opening Sunday race hurt his points and he enters Sydney Motorsport Park second last in the standings.

“Not too happy with how Winton went having two DNFs and second last in the points,” Hie reflected.

“We’ll move on to Sydney.”

Hie enjoyed some of the innovations of the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades Series including the rolling starts and longer races, which will be a demanding aspect at a high tyre degradation circuit like Sydney Motorsport Park.

“If we keep the 30-minute races the tyres will be absolutely cooked,” Hie summarised.

“Even looking at the Winton ones after the event, the rear rights were absolutely fried and Sydney will be challenging, but everyone is in the same boat.

“The rolling starts are different, but it stops a lot of the chaos in the opening corners and I think it’s a good thing.”

Despite the early setbacks to his season, Hie is determined to claw back ground starting in Sydney.

“My aim is to try the best I can,” he stated.

“I just want to get a good run. I want to go as fast as I can, drive the best I can and I know if I do that anything is possible. We made some big gains across the Winton weekend where the times may have been the same, but the way the car reacted and the way I drive was way better.

“The gains put us in good stead for Sydney.”

Entries are open for Round 2 of the Formula Ford Stars & Renegades Series at Sydney Motorsport Park as part of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series on May 30-June 1.
