Great racing concludes the Super Series in South Australia

Sunday at the Shell V-Power Motorsport Park delivered epic racing to conclude Round 4 of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series.

It was thrilling race after thrilling race in the TA2 Muscle Car Series, Australian Drivers Championship, Legend Cars Australia, Formula RX8 and Australian Super TT.

TA2 Muscle Car Series

There was no shortage of action in any of the three TA2 Muscle Car Series races today. In the end youngsters Jarrod Hughes and Tyler Cheney won the round and went home with the $20,000 cheque, while the $5000 prize in tools went the way of Tom Hayman.

The opening race of the day was for the co-drivers and was an absolute cracker.

Pole sitter Hughes was overtaken by Brook in the opening sequence of turns and was followed by Todd Hazelwood later in the lap.

Brook may have led early but he was on old tyres and quickly became a sitting duck. Hazelwood got by at Turn 17 on lap 2 and Hughes was quick to follow suit.

Fast forward a few laps, Hazelwood was leading and looking comfortable out front, however smoke began to bellow from the front left-wheel, and he started losing time.

On the penultimate lap Hughes caught and passed the Supercars co-driver.

Hughes went on to take the win from Elliot Barbour, Jordan Cox and Hazelwood who fell to fourth on the final lap. Brook finished in seventh.

Race 2 was for the regular drivers, Brad Gartner got passed his championship rival led into Turn 1. Haynes compounded his poor start by running wide at Turn 6 and fell to fifth.

Impressively by the end of lap 2 Haynes had made his way back to second and on lap 3 made his move for the lead at Turn 1.

Gartner fought back but could not keep Haynes at bay for much longer, he got back past at Turn 14 before he drove off into the distance.

Haynes won by 4.3s from Gartner, while Hayman stormed from last on the grid to finish in third ahead of Tyler Cheney.

The 17-lap endurance race as it did yesterday, unfortunately started with a multi-car pile-up.

Tim Brook spun in front of the field at Turn 6, and while Hugh McAlister stopped in time, Hayden Jackson ploughed into the back of McAlister and resulted in the safety car being called.

On the restart Hayman led Haynes, Tyler Cheney and Graham Cheney.

After a couple of laps Hayman had pulled 1.2s over Haynes, who himself led the two Cheney’s by 1.2s.

At the end of lap 9 both Cheney’s handed their machines to their co-drivers while Hayman and Haynes pitted on lap 13 and 14 respectively.

Hayman emerged out in front at the end of the pitstop cycle, while Haynes re-joined the field in third behind the Tyler Cheney/Jarrod Hughes car.

That was the way it remained, Hayman from Cheney/Hughes, Haynes, Cheney/Bates. Importantly the Gartner/Brook car did finish, albeit in eighth place.

Australian Drivers Championship

It was a dramatic final day of action for the Australian Drivers Championship competitors with two short, sharp, frantic races.

The opening race of the day saw several cars come together at Turn 2, Bradley Smith made contact with Brenton Davey, while behind Bastian Treptel also spun and the #23 of Peter Nowlan suffered a puncture.

Out front and away from the chaos, championship leader Damon Sterling maintained his position out front from Hayden Crossland.

That was the way it remained, despite his best efforts Crossland was forced to settle for second. Former champion Dean Crooke stayed out of trouble and finished the race in third.

Brad Vaughan who won Race 1 on debut yesterday was forced to retire due to fluid pouring onto the left-rear wheel and caused him to repeatedly spin.

In the fourth and final race, Crossland made the better start, and it was he who led exiting Turn 1.

Despite the relentless pressure, Crossland did not make an error and as a result scored his second race win in as many rounds. Luke Klaver crossed the line third ahead of Crooke and Vaughan who came from the back to finish in fifth.

By just two points Sterling won the round from Crossland, with the consistent Crooke rounding out the podium.

Legend Cars Australia

Even by Legend Cars Australia standards, Races 3, 4 and 5 provided chaotic, frantic and bonkers racing all day long.

Lachlan Ward took victory in two of the three races today, making it four from five for the round, the only blip was the reverse top 10 race win, in which he was also a contender on the final lap of the race.

Race 3 was possibly the craziest race of the season in Legend Cars Australia, and that is saying something!

On the final lap Robert Hogan led Ryan Pring, Aiden Williams and Ward, the four sat nose to tail.

Into Turn 6 Williams tried to make a move on the inside, but Ward was in even deeper. Williams hit Pring, Ward spun out while Hogan ran off the circuit before rejoining the track.

Incredibly Scott Melville from fifth took the lead and looked set to win. However, in the final sector Hogan hunted him down and snatched the lead at Turn 14.

Hogan won from Melville who nearly had a Steven Bradbury moment. Third went to Williams from Ward, Pring did not finish the race.

Race 4 was called early due to a crash between Chris Spicer and Darren Bradley.

Ward was awarded the win at the end of lap 3 from Dylan Thomas and Hogan.

Race 4 was a much tamer affair; Ward took the race win by 2s from Hogan. The two broke away as drivers scrapped behind for third position. Williams prevailed ahead of Lincoln Pope and Pring.

Ward obviously took the round honours, but second went to Williams while Dylan Thomas making a cameo appearance rounded out the podium.

Formula RX8

Brock Paine continued his great run of form by taking both wins today, this now means that he has won eight races in a row (all races in the last two rounds).

Rob Boaden came into the weekend tied on points with Paine in the championship, he limited the damage finishing second in the two races today, but despite his best efforts he could not match Paine.

In the inverted top eight grid race offered Boaden an opportunity. But Paine came from eighth on the grid to lead at the end of lap 2, highlighting the speed his machine had this weekend.

Boaden similarly came through to finish second while Brad Harris had the drive of the race, moving from the very back of the grid to finish in third. He finished in that position in the final race ahead of Geoff Connell and Justin Lewis.

Australian Super TT

Super TT had not two, but three races today. Notably the winner of Saturday’s race Blake Tracey did not compete due to engine troubles.

Cory Gillett in his Nissan S13 and Brent Edwards driving a Ford Falcon were left to fight out the front of the field.

The two could not be separated in the opening race running nose to tail throughout, Gillett held on to take the win by less than 0.2s.

It was much the same in Race 3, with Gillett winning by just under 3s, however in the final Edwards turned the tables and it was he who took the win.

Ryan Bell finished third in Race 1, however he retired from the final race handing third to David Buntin.

Gillett did enough to win the round overall from Edwards.
