Super Series One Raceway Wrap
The final round of the 2024 Hi-Tec Oil Super Series was held at One Raceway in country New South Wales, with the track recently opening, it was a thrilling event for all.
The four-wheeled racing return to One Raceway was a huge success, with drivers and event organisers extremely complementary of the venue.
TA2 Muscle Car Series
Josh Haynes not only sealed his maiden TA2 Muscle Car Series title, but he did so by taking pole, all four race wins and the lap record, a weekend the local Canberra based driver will never forget.
In Race 1, Haynes’ closest title rival, Brad Gartner lined up alongside him on the front row, but immediately Gartner dropped back through the field, unable to initially change gear.
He lost several places but lost even more when he avoided a lap 1 collision which resulted in a safety car.
After the safety car restart Gartner fell to the back of the field again unable to find a gear. He recovered to finish sixth.
Haynes won the race by 3s from youngster Sam Bates and Zach Loscialpo.
Within the first lap of Race 2 Gartner moved up to second, however Haynes had already pulled out a significant margin.
Bates hounded Gartner before the Chevrolet driver found a rhythm. Out front Haynes was untroubled and won from Gartner and Bates.
Early in Race 3, Gartner threw everything at Haynes, but the ‘Man of Steel’ did not crack.
Mid-race Gartner suffered a mechanical issue and was forced to retire, while out front Haynes beat home Bates and a lonely Aaron Prosser.
Race 4 was red flagged on lap 1, Prosser lost the rear of the car in the grass at Turn 10 and spun into the side of Mark Crutcher.
Haynes capped off his incredible season winning by over 15s, and with it took the TA2 title. Bates showed great race craft to hold Jackson behind in the fight for second.
Formula RX8
The inaugural one-make Formula RX8 series concluded with four highly competitive races across the weekend, and another driver notably taking a maiden series win.
Championship leader Brock Paine may have taken pole position, but it was his closest title rival that claimed the first race win of the weekend.
Rob Boaden and Paine exchanged the lead on several occasions throughout the first race, but Boaden prevailed by 0.6s, with Geoff Connell only 0.2s further back.
On the opening lap of Race 2 Paine made a rare unforced error, running wide through the grass at Turn 8 and dropped several places.
It was a thrilling race, across the line the top four were within 1.1s, Boaden from Justin Lewis, Thomas Derwent and Paine.
In the inverted top eight grid race, Connell was clean and effective with his passing and made his way to the front of the field with a couple of laps to go.
Paine made his way into second and was on his bumper on the final lap, but it was not enough. Connell scored his maiden win from Paine, Terry Lewis and Boaden.
Boaden rebounded to take the final race win of the season, the final battle may have gone the way of Boaden, but young Paine won the war. Taking the maiden Formula RX8 series.
Legend Cars Australia
Ryan Pring capped off a great season, securing the Australian Championship, but also the Australian title.
The driver who scored the most points at One Raceway, would take the honour of the Australian title.
Robert Hogan took the victory in the opening encounter. Pring was second from Dylan Thomas, Billy Finnigan and Ben Goodridge, all within 0.8s.
After Race 1 it was Pring all the way, the Canberra based driver beat home Hogan and Finnigan, the trio within 0.7s in the second encounter.
Pring even won the inverted grid race, in that affair Pring took victory by a staggering 8.4s over Ben Goodridge.
Race 4 of the weekend again saw Pring waltz off into the distance early, however Aiden Williams not only closed down his margin, but he briefly took the lead. Pring reclaimed the position and took the win. Race 1 winner Robert Hogan was third.
Race 5 saw a one-lap sprint after a lengthy yellow, Pring beat home Hogan and Williams.
Australian Driver’s Championship
While Dean Crooke might have won the round, Damon Sterling because the latest winner of the Australian Driver’s Championship, the first time it has been associated with the AASA.
After starting in second place, Crooke kept with Sterling on the opening lap of the race and starting lap 2, Crooke managed to draft up the inside into Turn 2 and take first.
Sterling into the Turn 8 hairpin could not engage a gear and spun, falling to the back of the pack.
This let Crooke take the win by 1.2s from Hayden Crossland and Niko French. Sterling recovered to fifth.
Race 2 saw Crooke and Crossland do battle, Crossland was in touching distance when he lost the rear of the car and ran wide at Turn 12 mid-race, from there Crooke was unchallenged and won his second race of the day. Sterling moved up from fifth to finish second ahead of Crossland and French.
In Race 3 Sterling was later on the brakes and went around the outside into Turn 2 to take the lead. From there Sterling and Crooke exchanged fastest laps, but the former held on. French finished third after Crossland spun attempting to take third from him.
The final race again saw Sterling and Crooke exchange fastest laps, with Sterling taking the final win and the title. Crooke finished second, while Crossland came from the back to finish third.
Stock Cars Australia
Danny Burgess may have won all of the races, but it does not tell a true tail of the action in Stock Cars Australia.
Burgess took the opening race win of the weekend from Brett Mitchell and Daniel Stubbs in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo NASCAR.
At the start of Race 2 Mitchell took the lead but spun at Turn 5. Leader Burgess then came under relentless pressure from Stubbs, both misread a backmarker and slammed on their brakes to avoid making contact, but Stubbs spun.
Burgess took a comfortable victory, behind, despite the spin, Stubbs was second and Mitchell recovered to fifth.
In Race 3 the top three could not be separated, notably Stubbs made a last lap move to take second from Mitchell.
The final saw Burgess hounded early on by Stubbs, however the latter ran off the road taking evasive action from a car in the middle of the track.
Despite losing five seconds, Stubbs caught Burgess, but Burgess held on.
Australian Formula Vee
The penultimate round of the national Formula Vee Series was won by Daniel Reynolds.
Reynolds and Dylan Thomas fought for the lead in Race 1 after polesitter Michael Kinsella collided with back marker Evelyn McCarthy, eliminating them both from the race. Reynolds prevailed in the lead fight.
Reynolds again edged out Thomas in Race 2, while Kinsella came from the back to finish third.
On lap 1 of Race 3 Reynolds slid off the road and fell outside the top five, however by the end of the race he recovered to finish in second, behind Kinsella and ahead of Thomas.
