Day 1 of the 2025 Super Series
The opening day of the 2025 Hi-Tec Oils Super Series has come to an end, all six categories completed three practice sessions, while Innovation Race Cars also qualified.
Innovation Race Cars
Qualifying for Innovation Race Cars was dominated by Geoff Emery, the IRC driver took poles for both Saturday and Sunday’s action.
Emery was over 0.5s clear in Q1 and Q2, setting a 1m 21.9s time in the first session.
Danny Stutterd was second from Geoff Taunton, John Hollinger and John Goodacre.
Grant Donaldson may have caused a red flag, but he was still fast enough to end up sixth, ahead of Timothy Leithhead, Darren Currie and Jon Crossing.
The second session - qualifying for Race 3 of the weekend - Emery lowered his time to a 1m 21.7. Stutterd had two spins at the sweeper, but he ended up second once again, 0.6s behind.
The Johns, Goodacre and Hollinger make up row two ahead of Donaldson and Currie.
Leithhead broke down and caused a red, he finished the session seventh, ahead of Crossing and Taunton.
As a result of taking both pole positions, Emery has taken the two bonus points to kick off his championship.
TFH Hire TA2 Muscle Car Series Presented by Maritimo
The TFH Hire TA2 Muscle Car Series had three practice sessions today. Practice 1 and 3 saw good lap times posted, however, practice 2 in the heat of the day did not.
On the combined times it was the Super2 Series drivers that finished up on the top of the timesheets.
The charismatic Jarrod Hughes ended up half a second clear of the field, the only driver in the one-minute 25s.
Ben Gomersall was second fastest, his 1m 26.06s time was also set in the final session of the day.
Mark Bailey ended up third in his Chevrolet Camaro, he was fastest in practice 1 and that time stood as his best. The same could be said for Josh Webster and Graham Cheney, they concluded the day in fourth and fifth respectively.
Josh Thomas, Tom Davies and Cameron Laws were next ahead of youngster Diesel Thomas, and 2024 series runner-up Brad Gartner who rounded out the top 10.
The Hi-Tec Oils sponsored driver Robbie Farr ended up just outside the top 10.
Legend Cars Australia
In the combined times for Legend Cars Australia, it was former TA2 Muscle Car Series winner Dylan Thomas who ended up at the top of the timesheets.
A field of 36 cars have entered this weekend, a record for the national Legend Cars category.
Thomas set his fastest time in the second practice, a 1m 35.475s, just 0.075s faster than Aiden Williams in the same session. Williams’ time was good enough for second place overall.
Robert Hogan was third fastest, he was 0.4s off the pace set by Thomas, however the time of 1m 35.876s was good enough to be third fastest overall.
Brendon Hourigan was fourth ahead of the reigning champion Ryan Pring, 0.002s from the fast time.
Riley Skinner, Timothy Reed, Blake Simpson, Askr Sendall ended up from positions six through to nine.
Joshua Benaud may have caused a red flag in practice 3 after coming to a stop on the exit of Turn 10, but he did end the session in 10th.
Australian Drivers’ Championship
For much of the day, the Australian Drivers’ Championship competitors ran on old rubber. When many put new tyres on in practice 3, it was simply to road the tyres ahead of qualifying tomorrow.
Reigning champion Damon Sterling was the fastest at the end of the day, he was over 1s up on Josh Gardiner and Hamish Leighton.
Former Formula Vee racer Adam Nicolson was fourth on debut in the series, he was the fastest driver in the final session.
Lucas Stasi rounded out the top five ahead of Peter Nowlan and former champion Dean Crooke.
Another ADC debutant Ivan Vantagiato, Niko Frech and last year’s runner-up Hayden Crossland rounded out the top 10. However, due to the tyre disparity, don’t read much into the order today.
Australian Super Tin Tops
Australian Super Tin Tops was topped by the car of Matt Sims, however Jordan Boys was behind the wheel at the time.
Corey Gillett was 4s back in second in his Nissan Silvia, with Brent Edwards rounding out the top three a further 1.5s back.
Tony Saint and Daniel Natoli rounded out the top five in their Mazda RX-7 and Audi TTRS respectively.
